One of the reasons it's not rated more highly is because it was a mainstream designer release, at a time when niche perfumes were firmly established. But it's essential - like the best pair of dressy dark blue slim fit jeans that one could hope to find, a pair that could be worn anytime anywhere with any outfit. Also it's not perhaps as exciting as an edgy leather scent or a great gourmand. We're talking really creme de la creme stuff here, like New York Intense or vintage Habit Rouge.Īpart from high price and lack of availability, maybe it's a bit too stereotypical - but one has to keep in mind this was a fougere marketed to men when released. One could argue in favour of stuff like vintage Paco Rabanne or Azzaro, but Rive Gauche pour Homme is much more suave and sophisticated if that's important.
The only comparable fougere in terms of quality I've found is Invasion Barbare, but Invasion Barbare is more opulent and doesn't have that understated quality. It's better than almost every modern fougere I've tried, stuff like Beau de Jour (PB or signature release) is not even remotely in the same ballpark if you want to talk about the evolution and dry down.

Could be skin chemistry, but it lasts a long time on my skin - through an entire work day from morning to evening. The blending quality is off the charts, and the dry-down is astonishingly good considering this wasn't a pricey niche release. More contemporary than classic fougeres, and more classic than other contemporary perfumes.
